Damascus University ranked 951st globally according to the International Round University Ranking (RUR)

The RUR World University Ranking is considered the fifth most influential ranking globally. It provides key indicators for assessing the performance of universities worldwide and is a crucial factor in accrediting universities across different countries. The rankings are administered by an institution headquartered in Tbilisi, Georgia.

In a statement on Damascus University website, Dr. Marwan Al-Raeei, Director of the Ranking Office, explained that the classification comprises two parts. The first part involves the classification of disciplines, with Damascus University being included in this section in February. This classification is primarily based on globally published scientific research. The second part is the general classification, which is particularly important for students. Damascus University was not previously included in this part but was added on May 30, 2024. It is worth noting that inclusion in the general classification is not a prerequisite for being included in the overall ranking, whereas inclusion in the first part is a requirement.

Dr. Al-Raeei highlighted that the general aspect of the RUR is based on the quality of education, scientific publications, and research. The supplementary part takes into account international collaboration and the financial stability of the university. Damascus University has made significant strides in international partnerships with other universities, particularly those outside Syria. This includes an increase in the number of foreign faculty members, especially within the Faculty of Health Sciences, where professors from various nationalities contribute to teaching. There has been a marked enhancement in the presence of foreign professors across the faculties of Damascus University in recent times.

The RUR classifications serve as an evaluation system designed to offer comprehensive insights into the performance of universities. The RUR research performance classification specifically assesses an institution's scientific effectiveness, quality, and recognition of its research activities, utilizing a range of scientific indicators, some of which align with the RUR research subclassification metrics. It is important to highlight that this classification was initially introduced in 2010.
