Activities of the first day of the environmental conference: “The Damascenea Iris, Together to Preserve Our Identity and Our Natural Heritage”

The scientific sessions on the first day of “The Damascenea Iris, Together to Preserve Our Identity and Our Natural Heritage” conference focused on the biodiversity and the sustainable development,” during which researchers from inside and outside Syria presented several research papers and scientific lectures that shed light on diversity, biotechnology and its patterns and importance, the dangers and problems resulting from its loss, the contributions it makes to achieving sustainable development goals, the reality of natural reserves in Syria, and future prospects for their reconstruction.

 

Damascus University website followed the conference activities and met with a number of participants:
Dr. Rama Aziz from the Faculty of Agriculture, Damascus University highlighted in her lecture the plant species found in the Syrian environment, with a focus on the species threatened with extinction as a result of overgrazing and misuse, which leads to their decline.

 

In her lecture, “The Damask Rose: a Natural, Cultural and Economic Resource,” Ms. Reem Ibrahim from the “Syrian Trust for Development” presented the experience of the “Syrian Trust for Development” related to the Levantine Rose, which spread from Syria to all parts of the world.

 

Dr. Mohieddin Kawas, Head of the Pasture and Forest Resources Program at ACSAD, participated with a research paper on the center’s contributions to preserving and developing biodiversity in degraded natural pastures in the Arab world, noting that the center has implemented more than 20 projects in the Arab countries to develop pastures and biodiversity, which are strongly linked.

 

Dr. Asseel Al- Azaat from the Department of Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Science, presented an introductory overview of the department and the importance of biodiversity and sustainable development from the perspective of this department,

 

It is noteworthy that the conference runs for two days at the amphitheater of Damascus University and it aims to exchange experiences, enhance internal awareness, and highlight the importance of preserving Syrian natural heritage.
