Student Exchange: spending one semester or more at Damascus University to:
1. study Arabic at the Higher Language Institute.
The Arabic Language Teaching Department of at the Higher Language Institute offers intensive Arabic language courses at eight levels, each with the duration of one month.
2. attend in other faculties and departments of the University as observerstudents:
2.1. They have to be at least upper-intermediate in Arabic.
2.2. They are not considered regular students at Damascus University and cannot take exams or obtain marks for the subjects they attend.
Priority is given to students who are candidates on the basis of a governmental cooperation agreement or a cooperation agreement between Damascus University and their own university.
The Directorate of International and Cultural Relations obtains admissions on behalf of students and communicates with them officially.
Damascus University is not obliged to register or provide services to any student who has not received a letter of acceptance or admission.
Duration of Study:
For observerstudents who wish to enroll in the faculties of Law, Sharia, Letters and Human Sciences (theoretical departments), the study is divided into two terms as follows:
The first semester: from 1stSeptember to the 30thJanuary
The second semester: from 15thFebruary to the 30thJune
As for the study duration of Arabic courses for non-native speakers, the management of the institute issues the annual program.
Registration of Exchange Students Under Cooperation Agreements
Documents required of foreign students wishing to study at the HigherLanguage Institute:
- A letter of nominationfrom the Directorate of International Relations of students’ universities showing the specialization and the academic year.
Note: Upon arrival, students can go directly to the institute's headquarters in Al-Mezzeh to register.
Documents Required of Foreign Students Wishing to Study in the Theoretical Departments:
- A letter of nomination from the Directorate of International Relations ofthe student’suniversity showing the specialization and the academic year.
- The student’s Curriculum Vitae in Arabic
- A letter of interest in Arabic outlining the purpose of study in Syria and the proposed study duration (one or two semesters).
Note: Studentshave to be at least upper-intermediate in Arabic.
Upon arrival,students go to the Directorate of Student Affairs to submit the following documents:
- Three copies of the passport translated into Arabic.
- Three recent photographs.
- The AIDS test conducted at Damascus AIDS Center. It can also be obtained from the University's medical department at the central administration in Al-Baramkeh, Damascus.
- The student’s certificate of degree translated into Arabic.
- A valid document issued by the mukhtar of the area of the student's residence and the telephone number.If any mistake is found in the documents or the phone number is not valid, the student will be deprived of the residency.
After submitting these documents at the Directorate of Student Affairs, the student is directed with a letter to the department where he wishes to register in order to finalize his registration.
Registration of Exchange Students Outside Cooperation Agreements
Documents required of foreign students wishing to study in theoretical colleges:
- The student’s Curriculum Vitae in Arabic.
- A letter of interest in Arabic outlining the purpose of study in Syria and the proposed study duration (one or two semesters).
- A recommendation letter from one of his professors at university in Arabic or English
Note 1:The student must have at least a good level in Arabic.
Arriving in Damascus, the student goes to the Student Affairs Directorate to submit thefollowing documents:
- Three copies of a valid passport translated into Arabic.
- Three recent photographs.

Note 2:
-Registration of observerforeign students outside the Cooperation Agreement shall begin each year from the 9thof January to the 2ndof February and any delay beyond the application deadline cannot be accepted.
- Observerstudents begin studies during the academic year from the 1stof September to the 30thof June.
- Observerstudents must commit to full time attendance in the department after registration according to a schedule signed and supervised by the Dean. Students must pledge to attend all classes and the faculty is responsible for monitoring students’ attendance.
- Study duration of observer studentsis limited to one year- to be renewed for another yearif necessary.
